Its November and the sun has finally returned. The leaves are crunchy underfoot and the sky is blue. (well, during the day, not during the evenings when the unit meetings are happening.) But clear skies mean we may be able to do some stargazing with the girls.
Last week our fledgeling Ranger Unit held its monthly meeting. They'd chosen to decorate pumpkins, but instead of carving, they brought sweets and enjoyed creating a pumpkin character with a difference. I'm hoping they are going to send me a picture which they took on their phone. Next month the plan is to make Christmas cards which can be delivered to some of the more elderly residents in the village.
In September we attempted to hold a District Jumble Sale. We had plenty of good quality jumble, a number of willing volunteers, but very few customers. The local newspaper had failed to print the advert and, 2 days before the sale denied all knowledge of it. They did offer to print the advert the following week though...
So we eventually bundled up all the clothes and sold them to a shop at 60p per kilo; donated large quantities to the Village Hall auction, saved a few high quality items to add to the Christmas Tombola, and sent all the toys to the Church for their forthcoming Christmas Fair. The HQ is nearly clear now.
We are grateful to the parents and Grandparents who came to help with all this. Oh, and the grand total was just under £300.
A couple of weeks ago 2 of the leaders decided to make a concerted effort to sort out the piles of dressing up clothes. We thought there were rather too many of these. Having sorted through bags and boxes of musty clothes, shoes and accessories, we sent some to the tip, and took the rest home to wash and dry. All we need know is to find some suitable plastic boxes to store them in before we return a more compact selection to the HQ store cupboard.
Within the units, seasonal activities are underway. Last week the Brownies enjoyed Hallowe'en parties. The HQ had been decorated wonderfully for the event and the Monday party was run by a Guide working towards her Baden Powell Challenge Award. Next week, I believe, they will be sparkling with sparklers.
