After a busy term I'm taking the chance to relax and unwind a bit. This term we tried something new and invited the Brownies to a sleepover at camp. A few guides had signed up, but the Brownies could choose to come for just the day, or to sleepover as well. They were really keen, and of those who went home, most did so because of a prior commitment on the Sunday morning. As long as we can find enough adults to come and help, we plan to repeat this next year. The sun shone and we all did activities around the Commonwealth Games theme. A backstroke swimming race on dry land is great fun!
Our Rainbows came to visit and we all sang together around the fire before they went home.
Thanks to a team of volunteers we were also able to run a day camp in April, and a weekend camp for Guides in July. I'm pleased that we have lots of girls who are developing the skills to take on responsibilities at camp, because it will make the roles of the adults easier. In days gone by, Guides would camp for a full week in the Summer, but these days its rare to find a team who can give the time for this.
The Brownies have enjoyed celebrating the Big Brownie Birthday, as it's 100 years since their Great Grandmas were able to join their big sisters in the Guiding Game. Their finale was a presentation for their parents about The History of Brownies (accompanied of course by tea and cake). It was a lovely evening as the girls showed what they had learned, spoke clearly and confidently, and had fun modelling the uniforms of yesteryear.
Looking at their beaming smiles, and the proud parents, I am reminded that, although today's Brownies have a very modern look, underneath the skills and values they are learning are very similar to those of the first Rosebuds back in 1914.
